  • This column is specifically about digital tools for note-taking, but it also provides a broad framework for evaluating digital tools in a way that does not draw from an either/or fallacy. Instead, the author suggests looking at the old "pen vs. computer" debate through a lens of affordances: supporting students, saving content, searching content, and sharing content. The author dismisses the either/or fallacy by asking, "What if we approach the concept by identifying what is best for individual students? In other words, does the system adequately support the students' learning needs? Allow students to save their notes to multiple locations? Let students search for salient points? Permit students to share with peers and teachers?"
