‘What I Really Want Is Someone Rolling Around in the Text’ [from The New York Times]
"Although I’ve played with Kindles and iPads and Nooks, and I like them all in theory, I haven’t been able to commit to any of them. As readers, they disable the thing that, to me, defines reading itself. And yet I’ve continued to hope that, in some not-too-distant future, e-reading will learn to take marginalia seriously. And it looks as if that might be happening right now."

"We explore applications like SMART Notebook Software, Screencast-O-Matic, and EDpuzzle. It also lets you know who watched the videos and how students answer your embedded questions. We practice recording videos and then design lessons for 3–5 minute flipping videos that introduce a skill or strategy while holding students accountable for the content within the video. "

Age of Distraction: Why It's Crucial for Students to Learn to Focus | MindShift
A rationale discussion about the myth of multitasking and the reality of partitioned attention and the importance of focus ("mindfulness"). Rather than naively condemning digital devices as a detriment to developing executive functioning and focus, the expert quoted in this post discussed the educational imperative of teaching kids "concentration abilities as part of the school curriculum." Goleman said, “The more children and teens are natural focusers, the better able they’ll be to use the digital tool for what they have to get done and then to use it in ways that they enjoy.”

TeachingBooks.net | Author & Book Resources to Support Reading Education
This is a proprietary Web-based service for K-12 schools, school districts, libraries, and universities. The collection contains thousands of children's and young adult books, searchable by title, author, and topic. Once you locate a book, you can click "Text Complexity Results" to see a full range of numeric leveling results. That is about all that is available for free, however. You must have a license to access all the other multimedia resources (videos, audio files), Web links (author interviews, press clippings), and PDFs (book guides, lesson plans, activities) attached to the book. It appears only family and institutional subscriptions are available and cost several hundreds of dollars. From the home page: "If you read fiction and nonfiction books in any discipline or setting, TeachingBooks.net's database of instructional materials will enliven your K-12 reading and library activities."
