Why kids should choose their own books to read in school [from The Washington Post "Answer Sheet" blog]
One of the most effective ways to accelerate literacy development is to simply give students access to developmentally appropriate high-interest texts and plenty of uninterrupted time to read. This column by former NCTE president Joanne Yatvin describes the heydey of independent reading and Silent Sustained Reading (SSR), two popular classroom practices that ultimately met with disfavor and fell out of use after publication of the NRP report in 2000 and the era of high-stakes testing that followed. Yatvin specifically addresses how to overcome some of the hurdles and negative perceptions of independent reading and SSR in K-12 classrooms.
