In this reprint of an article first published in 2010 in "English Journal," Alfie Kohn argues that teachers cannot so much create motivation to read and to write as they can "tap" intrinsic motivation. It is less about motivating and more about avoiding those traps that destroy kids' natural drive to read and to write. Central to the problem is a lack of choice and decision-making for kids: [...[T]he fact is that kids learn to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions.... A lack of opportunity to make decisions may well manifest itself in a lack of interest in reading and writing. Were that our goal, our single best strategy might be to run a traditional teacher-centered, teacher–directed classroom."
